God Called Moses

God Called Moses

Have you ever felt that you could not accomplish something important?

Do you sometimes think whatever you currently can do is not really special enough for God to use and you could only do something great for God if you had more time, talent, or money? Well I would suggest you shouldn’t worry about what you don’t have or about the circumstances that you are not in. If we overthink it and look far ahead for something else to do we may easily miss the very important things God wants us to do right now with what we currently have.

When God called Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt he had some significant reservations. “’They will never believe me or listen to me!’ Moses protested. ‘They will say, “The Lord didn’t appear to you.”’ Then the Lord asked him, ‘What’s that in your hand?’ He answered, ‘A shepherd’s staff.’ The Lord said, ‘Throw it on the ground.’ When Moses threw it on the ground, it became a snake, and he ran away from it. Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Reach out and grab the snake by its tail.’ He reached out and grabbed it, and it turned back into a staff as he held it. The Lord explained, ‘This is to convince the people that the Lord God of their ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, appeared to you.’” Exodus 4:1-5

Notice that God didn’t call Moses only to ask him what he didn’t have and then say “oh never mind” when Moses suggested he didn’t have anything or worth to offer. God asked Moses what was is in his hand. God didn’t ask because God didn’t know, God asked because too often we don’t question what is in our hands. We just assume we know what is in our hand and take it for granted as just a common accessory to life nothing more or less than how we currently see or use it. If we stopped to really question what we have and how could be transformed into a powerful tool for the Lord’s service if surrender it to God in faith our lives would be very different. With a simple staff God did many miracles besides transforming it into a snake but I will just share a few more.

“When Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky, the Lord sent thunder and hail, and lightning flashed down to the ground. So the Lord rained hail on the land of Egypt;” When Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky, the Lord sent thunder and hail, and lightning flashed down to the ground. So the Lord rained hail on the land of Egypt; Exodus 9:23 And God told him “Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.” Exodus 14:16

So, before you think you cannot do anything significant for God with what you have remember what we may think is insignificant may not be in the eyes of God. Remember that the simple staff in the hand of Moses became a powerful tool when committed to God in faith. Instead of focusing on the talents and abilities you don’t have remember who God is, what God gave you, and keep in mind that the same God who took a simple staff and parted the sea asked us to consider what is in our hands and wants us to commit it to the Lord as well. We may just have a little time or small talents but little things can do great things to help others because God can do mighty things with whatever we are willing to commit to God.
