This BuzzFeed video is hilarious. They take 6 Jewish people who are non-observant and challenge them to eat a kosher diet for one week based on the dietary laws in Judaism.
They first get a list of the dietary laws: The opening line, "Only animals with split hooves that chew their cud can qualify…?" refers to the biblical rules for determining which animals are kosher, permitted to be eaten, and those which are forbidden… according to Jewish law. It also explains the rules of cooking & the proper handling/preparing of kitchen items. You can see they are already worried, and they haven’t even begun.
I will say they were a bit challenged in 2015 when this video first came out. We now have more kosher options in the grocery stores. I did think it was funny that they thought they could go anywhere and ask for kosher options. I don’t think many people have heard of the word "kosher" or what it means. Even 6 years ago, I found it hard to find good vegetarian options in Tampa, Florida.
I'm starting to think about whether I'm taking the time to be more mindful of what I eat. I like to think so, but like these people, it is easy to get into a routine and be on autopilot. A little preparation and research can make it much easier, at least to find things to eat, and there are a lot of things you can eat that are kosher and delicious. I can’t speak to the kitchen prep. I’m not sure that I could do all of that. I am already squeezed for time. I loved that, at the end, we got to hear what they thought of the experience. The most telling and thought-provoking quote was “I realized I don’t deny myself of anything that I want.” Is that a good thing? What do you think? Either way, this was a super funny video; it got me thinking about food
