Snails and Spinach

Snails and Spinach

When Dona was a young girl she was supposed to cook some spinach for her father because he had high blood pressure and wanted to eat a healthy home cooked lunch instead of the food at work.

But she spent her time playing by climbing on top of the roof of the house and using it as a slide (yes that is very dangerous and foolish) and stopping near the edge to avoiding falling to the ground instead of doing what she was supposed to do. She had all morning to get the spinach ready so she just took her time, but the morning didn’t last forever.

And when the time got nearer when the food should have been done in time for her father to have lunch she just quickly took some leaves off the spinach plant and without even checking them, rinsed the leaves quickly, put them in a pot, and started to cook. When her father came in and started to eat he mentioned the spinach was very gritty and he asked her if she had washed it properly. She insisted she did but when he put some spinach on his fork and raised it you could see there was a snail on it as well. The look of disappointment her father gave her when he saw how dirty the spinach was so sad she wished she got a spanking instead.

She loved her father very much and felt horrible that she had fed him snails by doing such a poor job preparing the spinach, but her father forgave her and she loved him even more for it. From this lesson we can learn to take Solomon’s advice. “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.” Ecclesiastes 9:10

We should be careful to do our best in this life because our heavenly Father is coming to meet us and we don’t want to disappoint Him and say, "The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not saved." Jeremiah 8:20. The Bible says, “Woe to you who put far off the day of doom, who cause the seat of violence to come near;” Amos 6:3 God doesn’t want us to be unprepared to meet Him and enjoy the good things He has prepared for us to eat.

That is why Yeshua said, “As for me, I rebuke and discipline everyone I love; so exert yourselves, and turn from your sins! Here, I’m standing at the door, knocking. If someone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he will eat with me. I will let him who wins the victory sit with me on my throne, just as I myself also won the victory and sat down with my Father on his throne.” Revelation 3:19-21
