Cutting Edge Israeli "FireDome" Tech Offers Hope for Fire Prevention in Los Angelos

Beginning Jan. 7, 2025, the deadly Palisades and Eaton fires began in Southern California, destroying thousands of businesses and homes, the costliest wildfire in U.S. history.  The Palisades fires are thought to have begun by fireworks and human activity and the Eaton fires by dormant power lines, while some claim it’s unclear how the fires began. The fires were finally contained by Jan. 31, 2025.

Governor Newsom reports 96% of debris has been removed, saying “This has been the fastest fire recovery in terms of debris removal in modern history.”  Rubble from 12,048 homes has been removed.  City, county and state officials are working to rebuild, with lower costs. Although at this point, six months after the fires, less than 100 permits have been granted. More than 16,000 structures were burned in the Palisades fire, and more than 7,000 (mostly homes) in the Eaton fire.  The Biden administration approved 100% FEMA reimbursement for individual and public assistance, and the Trump administration invested more than $3 billion on loans for small businesses and nonprofits.  Many are working to rebuild the ravaged areas.

How exciting to read: “As the costliest wildfire in U.S. history continues to shape life in Los Angeles, Israeli fire prevention experts are working with local officials and residents to help prevent future disasters.”  Israeli firefighters assisted at the time of the fires, but another delegation of Israeli fire experts have arrived showcasing innovative wildfire detection and prevention technologies.

Systems presented include the “FireDome,” and “WaterDome,” sound-based early detection devices used by Israel’s Division of Forestry.  The “FireDome” acoustic system uses artificial intelligence in able to detect the unique sound of flames.  It deploys capsules with fire retardant, creating a barrier around homes.  This will stop the fire before reaching communities.  The “WaterDome” system maintains water pressure, responding in “real time,” with its changing demands.

An American billionaire, businessman Rick Caruso, is the founder and executive chairman of Caruso, the company which owns and manages Palisades Village, a nearly three-acre, 125,000 square foot shopping center with 42 businesses.  This area was mostly untouched by the fires due to private firefighters, water tenders brought in and buildings of fire-resistant materials.  The mall has been closed due to the devastation of the surrounding areas. Plans are the Village will reopen in early 2026.

Israel Bachar, Consul General of Israel to the Pacific Southwest, spoke of shared values and strategic partnership.  “Israel is a small country, but we are a superpower in advanced technology.”  Also, “We want to share that technology with America—especially when it can save lives.”  California lawmakers and U.S. congressional leaders have expressed interest in the Israeli systems, hoping these innovations will help California become more fireproof.
