Each year, as summer wanes and the air begins to cool, a quiet, sacred season arrives: Elul. Unlike the fanfare of holidays, Elul passes almost unnoticed by the world, yet it carries a powerful spiritual invitation. It calls us to pause, to look inward, and to prepare our hearts for the coming High Holy Days. This month is a time to confront what we have ignored, to mend what we have broken, and to step intentionally into the presence of God.
For believers attuned to the Three Angels’ Messages of Revelation 14, Elul offers a unique opportunity. It is a time to live these truths in our daily lives, to align our hearts with God’s call, and to awaken to the reality of His judgment and mercy.
Revelation 14 begins with the first angel proclaiming the everlasting gospel: “Fear God and give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come. Worship Him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water” (Revelation 14:7). Elul encourages exactly this posture, asking us to step back from routine, examine our lives, and acknowledge God’s sovereignty. The shofar, traditionally blown throughout the month, serves as a spiritual wake-up call, echoing the angel’s invitation to remember God in every aspect of life. Reflection during this time allows us to consider whether we have feared God in humility, given Him glory in our actions, and honored His commandments in our choices.
The second angel warns against false systems and calls for discernment: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the Great, which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries” (Revelation 14:8). Elul challenges us to examine not only our personal actions but also the influences and ideologies we have accepted uncritically. This season offers an opportunity to repent for compromises, for passivity in the face of injustice, and for moments when we failed to stand for truth. Daily reflection in Elul helps refine our hearts and minds in preparation for the judgment of the High Holy Days.
Faithfulness is central to the message of the third angel, who calls for perseverance: “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury…This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of God who keep His commands and remain faithful to Yeshua” (Revelation 14:9–12). Elul reminds us that reflection is not merely an intellectual exercise but a call to live faithfully. The month provides space to mend relationships, forgive others, and recommit to a life of obedience and compassion. True preparation includes repairing what is broken, strengthening what is weak, and centering our lives on God’s love and truth.
By embracing the practices of Elul, we can embody the messages of the angels in our own hearts. The month calls us to awaken, repent, discern, and persevere. Living these truths daily allows us to step into the High Holy Days with hearts ready to reflect God’s glory, stand firm in His truth, and walk faithfully in His love.
