Gardening in the City

Have you ever considered planting your own fruits and vegetables?

It's a great idea, but what happens if your house has no outside space for gardening? Or perhaps you live in an apartment and have no garden? There is a solution! Start planting on your balcony and begin to enjoy organic and freshly picked vegetables and fruits just right at your doorstep.

Balcony Gardening
There are several things you need to consider before starting your own gardening project. First, you should find out more about the building's regulations if you live in a building. If balcony gardening is permitted but your balcony is very small, you may try vertical gardening.
Other important things to consider are the growing conditions; is your balcony receiving enough sunlight? Some plants may grow very well in partial shade like leaf crops and root crops. However, fruits usually need a minimum of four to five hours of full sunlight per day. How's the wind? If your balcony has high winds, you may probably need to have a windbreak.

Which Vegetables, Soil and Containers Are Good for Balcony Gardening?
Container planting is a good choice if you really want to do balcony gardening. It consumes a very limited space and a vast number of vegetables grow well even in little containers. These include tomatoes, beans, lettuce, green onions, spinach, peppers, broccoli, carrots, beets, and radishes. You can use lightweight containers made from wood or plastic so that your balcony garden will not be so heavy. If you buy soil, choose potting mix and organic compost that are also light in weight. Plants in containers are requiring more water than ordinary garden plants; therefore, you must water them once or twice a day.

Indoor Winter Gardening
There are various options for indoor winter gardening. You can plant either an indoor winter herb or you can have vegetables and fruits in containers. Spinach, tomatoes, lettuce, cherry, radishes, and more grow very well indoors during winter. Whatever the season is, it is important that plants have sufficient heat, light, and moisture. Lack of moisture can be relieved by spraying the plants with water and natural light can be subsidized through artificial light.

Community Gardening
If balcony gardening is not possible and you are still really eager to grow your own vegetables and fruits, you can search for and join a gardening community. Some cities have their own community gardening club. Another option is to organize your own community gardening program and reach friends and other people who share the same passion.
